India’s weekly Covid cases up 35%, first rise since January

NEW DELHI: After 11 successive weeks of decline, Covid-19 cases in India surged again this week, rising by 35% over the previous seven days’ numbers, on the back of a spike in infections in the contiguous states of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
However, the overall case numbers remain low and, so far, the surge seems restricted to the three states. India recorded around 6,610 fresh cases in the week ending Sunday (April 11-17), up from a count of 4,900 in the previous seven days, as per TOI’s Covid database.

Deaths from the virus continue to decline in the country with only 27 new fatalities recorded during the week, the lowest in over two years since March 23-29, 2020. Last week, 54 deaths were reported, 13 in Kerala.

All three states witnessing a surge in infections saw fresh cases more than double in the space of a week. Delhi logged by far the highest count of new cases at 2,307, a rise of 145% over last week’s tally of 943. The capital accounted for more than a third of all cases reported in the country.
